In light of #plasticfreejuly, someone asked me yesterday about how I started to incorporate a more “green” way of living and it took me a while to think about. My journey started about a little over a year ago, but I can also say that my aunt and grandma were the ones who truly showed me ways to reduce and reuse products while growing up. They taught me to treat things with care so that they would last me a long time. As a kid, I used to think reusing a container was gross or using a rag to clean the counter was icky; however, my thoughts on this have obviously changed. My Peruvian family that immigrated to the US did this as a way to save money and create less waste. So, these ideas permeated with me since childhood, and I am so grateful that my great aunt showed me how to stretch a penny.

If I had to narrow down how to start in three ways, here is what I would focus on:

To-Go Items

So, the first thing I started with was my trips to the market or farmer’s market or any to-go items. I thought about what I could use at home to carry our produce home. I made it a habit and sometimes I forgot my bags. I would say that in itself was a huge leap for my family and I. I made sure to always have two utensil kits, a to-go cup, reusable straw in a bag. You can even reuse containers for your to-go bag. I use lemon oil to get rid of labels on jars and use that to store leftovers in my fridge or to-go snacks for Juniper. I also love stasher bags for snacks! I store all of my reusable bags in a large straw bag, so they are all in one place and I can just take that bag when we go grocery shopping.

Buy Less or Borrow

The second thing I thought about was clothing. I wanted to buy from companies that believed in packaging that involved less waste on the planet or to make my own version of what I needed. This is really difficult, especially when the cost of shopping small can be high at times, but I’d rather have less clothing that I wear often than a closet full of clothes that I would never wear. I am totally guilty of this in the past when I used to work in retail. Another great option would be to buy second-hand or slightly damaged products. For example, this top that I am wearing I purchased from a “seconds” sale meaning it was slightly damaged in some way from Harly Jae.

DIY

I started making my own cleaning products and I am still trying to navigate this. I’ve been making my own cleaning products with oils or other plant materials to have non-toxic products in my house. I’m slowly making myself everyday products like a face oil, toner, etc. right now too.

Also, this lifestyle is truly a journey and a slow process. I am not perfect with it.  I think the most important thing throughout this entire process is to take one thing at a time and accept it is not something that happens overnight. And, that’s OK.

Woah, it’s been a hot minute since I updated my weekly fancies and really updated my blog. Let’ just say, I’ve been really busy being a working mama. Since I took some time off work, I’m making a more conscious effort to step outside more. Since summer is a couple of days away, here are some things that I have been digging lately.

◡I’ve been diving deeper with my skin care routine and only using clean beauty products. Follain is a company I stand behind and sell non-toxic beauty. I used to be kind of ashamed for only selecting clean products to put on my body because it wasn’t mainstream and people would often call me a “hippie” for it; however, I don’t care anymore about that label. Who cares about labels? I care about what my skin absorbs! I’m really into this face wash, toner spray, and night cream. If you don’t want to get the full sized version of these products, you could try their essentials kit.

◡I started taking vitamins catered towards women to make my life easier. It’s called Binto. I took a quiz based on my needs and they package the vitamins you need to take for the day. The vitamins come in recyclable packets and are 100% BPA free. There are no phthalates, parabens, glycerin and titanium dioxide, which can all disrupt hormones. I wish I would have discovered this right after Juniper was born, but I am fortunate to have stumbled upon it now.

◡I’ve been dreaming about having a garden and chickens in our backyard. Yeah, I know what you are thinking, “…but you live in Los Angeles.” Well, I would like to cut costs with buying food and growing my own. So far, I have my eye on these garden beds and this chicken coop. I’ve been totally geeking out on this stuff for the last couple of months. It all started when my coworker let me borrow this book, another book, and then brought me some eggs from her own chicken coop.

◡I’m obsessed with this cook book. For the most part, I avoid processed foods, especially sugar. If I am craving sugar, I will resort to dates or almond butter, but when I want to have a treat, I crack open this book, get inspired and bake away. I love that the book uses natural sugars and is grain and gluten-free.

◡I’ve been cutting back on spending; however, I needed a pair of new jean shorts because of all of the jean shorts I had before Juniper no longer fit me, meaning they are too big. Woo hoo for me, sad face for my wallet. I love that these shorts are “The fabric: organic cotton denim from Candiani, sustainably dyed using shrimp shells (the upshot—it requires 65% less chemicals and 75% less H2O than conventional material). The factory: the Fair Trade Certified™ Saitex, which recycles 98% of its water and uses renewable energy, plus, for each product manufactured, Madewell contributes to a Community Development Fund managed by the workers).”

◡Juniper is two years old now, which means she needs planned activities even more. I wanted to get her dough to play with, but not the traditional playdough because I read that it is toxic if you eat it. Since she like to munch on crayons from time to time (I attribute this to my husband buying these honey flavored crayons, so now she thinks crayons all taste like honey), I purchased this eco-dough for her to sculpt. It is non-toxic, BPA, phthalate and fragrance free.

◡I’ve been living in this rose-colored sweater that I bought from the Echo Park Craft Fair. For whatever reason, I avoided pink while I was pregnant, but lately, I’m bringing the color back.

◡I’m trying to grow my eyebrows out again and I’m putting this oil on them at night. Also, I’ve been taking these supplements to help with hair growth. I need this especially for the Tweezerman eyelash curler that ripped my lashes out.

◡And whenever I have some time to read, I will dive into this beautifully, curated book on natural beauty and recipes.

◡I am currently listening to this podcast. It is so inspiring!

This summer is so different from last summer. I felt like I didn't have a summer because I was so preoccupied with healing myself and taking care of Juniper.  I had some wiggle room to relax, but I am also squeezing in time, during odd hours, to get some work done too.  I've been enjoying taking her to music class for the past three Fridays. I also started a mini garden in a grow box outside our bedroom window. I've been pretty consistent with going to Soulcycle and completing the SWEAT app. Now, the challenge will be to make my workout times consistent in the fall.

◡ I'm so excited to go to Kauai and can't wait to go here and relax with the turtles.

◡ This has been my go-to cookbook for the yummiest sweets.

◡I've been living in these overalls all summer.

◡I've been listening to this podcast every week when I work out at home. The podcast focuses on wellness, entrepreneurship, spirituality & self-development.

◡I love the pops of color in Tyler Haney's (founder of Outdoor Voices) house. I also love and own these leggings.

◡I so want one of these to put a picture of Juniper at my desk.

◡I'm so addicted to using this at night. I'm just kind of obsessed with anything mushroom right now.

◡We finally bought a grow box that is raised off the ground. However, I am scared all of plants will die when I get back from Kauai.
